Hip Replacement Longevity

Many patients considering total hip replacement want to know how long the implant is likely to last. Older figures such as “8–12 years” are still sometimes quoted, but modern data shows that contemporary hip replacements generally last much longer.

Why do hip replacements sometimes need revision? The most common reasons for revision include loosening of the implant, fracture around the prosthesis, infection, and recurrent dislocation. Less common reasons include persistent pain, leg-length difference, implant wear or breakage, and component malposition.

What does the Australian data show?

The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) shows that the risk of revision after a modern total hip replacement remains relatively low at long-term follow-up. Many well-performing contemporary prostheses have revision rates in the range of 5–8% at 15 years, with the majority of patients not requiring revision surgery even at 15–20 years.

Male patients have a slightly higher revision rate (around 11.7%) than female patients (around 9.6%). Younger patients (under 55) have higher revision rates than those over 75. The average age of patients receiving a hip replacement in Australia is 67 years. Factors such as obesity and overall health can also influence longevity.

Prosthesis selection Registry data helps surgeons choose implants with proven lower revision rates. Well-performing modern prostheses can show revision rates in the region of 5% at 15 years in large numbers of patients.

Summary There is no single answer that applies to every patient. However, current Australian registry data shows that the majority of modern hip replacements continue to function well for many years.
