Hip Resurfacing Surgery: An Alternative to Conventional Total Hip Replacement for Selected Patients
Hip resurfacing is a surgical treatment for hip arthritis that preserves more of the natural femoral bone than conventional total hip replacement.
Rather than removing the femoral head and replacing it with a stemmed implant, the surgeon reshapes the femoral head and covers it with a metal cap. The hip socket is also resurfaced with a metal component.
Who may be suitable for hip resurfacing?
Hip resurfacing may be considered for selected patients, particularly younger, active adults with advanced hip arthritis, adequate bone quality and suitable hip anatomy.
Patient selection is important. Age, sex, bone density, kidney function, metal sensitivity and other individual factors may affect suitability. Not every patient with hip arthritis is a candidate. Assessment includes history, examination and imaging.
Hip resurfacing versus total hip replacement
Both procedures aim to relieve pain and improve function in patients with hip arthritis.
- Hip resurfacing preserves more femoral bone and retains the natural femoral neck.
- Total hip replacement involves removing the femoral head and replacing it with an artificial joint, typically using a stem inserted into the femur.
- Hip resurfacing carries specific risks, including femoral neck fracture, metal-related adverse tissue reactions and the potential need for revision surgery. These risks are discussed in detail before any operation is planned.
- Conventional total hip replacement remains an established and effective treatment for many patients. The choice depends on individual assessment.
